Term 4 Week 2 - Independent Reflection

October 07, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

Firstly I forgot to do a Day 7 photograph but I think the previous six confirm I have a very diverse life with perhaps living within 400 yards of the beach my photographs have a maritime flavour.

I found the discussion about copyright being particularly interesting. It is a complex area and nobody is right. Personally I think Prince's use of Cariou's photographs is definitely something I couldn't do I would never use somebody else photograph but I would be flattered if appropriately recognised if someone used one of my photographs.

The writing of a mission, product and market was interesting and the discussion at the webinar fruitful. I did the business plan activity for both my practice and project and this is included below.

AARDVARK PHOTOGRAPHY

A Mission Statement

Aardvark Photography’ mission is to deliver top quality sports images at the time that the customer wants them.

The Product

The product is top quality sports images delivered to the customer at the time of their choosing. Be that, at the time, that evening via social media or longer term for full high-resolution images.

The Market

I see the market as being:

  1. Printed media, newspapers requiring instant images and magazines more slow time.
  2. Social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram on the evening of the event split between my own pages and the sports organisation pages.
  3. Longer term markets for high-resolutions images.

MA PROJECT

A Mission Statement

The mission for the MA project is not about sport but it is about the sportsmen. I will deliver top quality portraits, both formal and informal, of wounded, injured and sick servicemen in a sports environment.

The Product

The product will show, mostly young, people, who because they were accepted by the military were fit and able, and have then had a life-changing incident. My photographs are intended to show how these people still get excitement from competing and sometimes just for a moment they forget about their illness or injury.

The Market

I have always intended my main market to be other injured or sick servicemen showing what is possible, the sportsmen themselves and the supporting service charities that have enabled them to compete.  I have also found that there is an interest in the general public.  I will do an exhibition of the best photographs at the end but my main output will be a photobook which will contain more images.

Context

In terms of the photographs for the WIP I have looked at the work of Giles Price, Michael Stokes and Bryan Adams amongst may others. I looked at Giles Prices Not Forgotten Association and Old Guard galleries and I really like these in particular the Old Guard series which are photographs of First World War veterans who are now all over 100 years old. These portraits are formal they are all wearing collar and tie and they are shot with a neutral background. Michael Stokes are american veterans and are less formal but the photographs focus on the injuries and finally Bryan Adams's photographs are much less formal but also shot with a neutral background.

Given this and because I want to focus on the individuals forgetting their injuries even if just for a moment. I wanted to take portraits in the sporting environment. I have chose to do these as environment portraits.
